Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 12, 2026 · Applies to the Bonjourney Android app and this website

The short version

Bonjourney is built to work fully offline. There is no account, no sign-up, and no Bonjourney-run server that your learning data is ever sent to. Your lesson progress, streaks, and vocabulary review history are stored only on your device. We do not sell, rent, or share your data, because we don't collect any to begin with.

1. Who we are

Bonjourney is developed and published as an independent app. If you have any question about this policy or the app, contact us at frenchly@fran.com.

2. Information we collect

We do not operate a backend server, and the app does not create a user account. The following is stored locally on your device only, using Android's standard app storage, and is never transmitted anywhere by us:

Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage from Android Settings, permanently deletes all of this data. There is nothing to "delete" on our end because nothing is ever sent to us.

3. Permissions the app requests, and why

PermissionPurpose
Microphone (RECORD_AUDIO) Requested only when you open a speaking exercise. Your speech is passed to your device's own speech-recognition system to produce a transcript, which the app compares locally to the expected phrase. Bonjourney does not record, store, or transmit your voice to any server we control.
Internet (INTERNET) Used only to (a) load curated lesson videos embedded from YouTube, (b) open a video externally in your browser if the in-app embed fails, and (c) allow your device's text-to-speech / speech-recognition engine to function, which on some devices may involve the engine's own cloud service (see Section 4). The core lesson content, vocabulary, and exercises all work with no internet connection.

4. Third-party services

Bonjourney embeds a small number of third-party components to provide specific features. These components operate under their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to review:

No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising SDKs are currently integrated into Bonjourney. We don't use Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, Facebook SDK, or any similar tool. This app version collects nothing about how you use it beyond what's stored privately on your own device.

5. Advertising

Bonjourney does not currently show ads. If we introduce advertising in a future version (e.g. via Google AdMob), this policy will be updated before that version is released to disclose exactly what data is involved — typically an advertising identifier used to serve and measure ads — and you will be able to review the updated policy from within the app's update notes and on this page.

6. Children's privacy

Bonjourney is a general-audience language-learning app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and given the app collects no personal information from anyone at all, there is nothing collected from any user regardless of age. If you believe a child has provided us information in error, contact us and we will address it — though as described above, we do not operate any system capable of receiving such information in the first place.

7. Data security

Because no learning or usage data leaves your device, there is no transmission to secure. Data stored locally on your device is protected by your device's own operating-system security (screen lock, disk encryption, etc.), which we recommend you keep enabled.

8. Your rights

Depending on your location, privacy laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK) or CCPA (California) give you rights over personal data — access, correction, deletion, and portability. Since Bonjourney does not collect or store any personal data on servers we control, these rights are automatically satisfied: you already have full local control over the only data that exists (via the app's own reset/settings options, or by uninstalling the app). If you have questions about this, contact us at frenchly@fran.com.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves — most notably if advertising, analytics, or an account system is added in the future. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated effective date, and where required, disclosed via the app's update notes on Google Play.

10. Contact us

Questions, concerns, or requests related to this policy can be sent to frenchly@fran.com.

This policy is written in plain language to be genuinely useful, not just legally defensive. If anything above is unclear, please tell us.
